Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Grant Marsh, who spent a lifetime traveling the great rivers of the American West as a steamboatman and pilot. Beginning as a cabin boy in 1846, at the age of twelve, Marsh spent decades working and traveling the length of the Missouri River and its tributaries as one of the great operators and navigators of his time. The book was written in the early 20th century using interviews with Marsh, rare and unique historical records, and commentary from other rivermen who knew and sailed with Marsh. It includes reflections on the realities of steamboat travel during the fur, military and settlement expansion into the western territories. As a detailed historical account of the life of a steamboatman and river pilot from the 1840s to the late 1800s, this book provides insight into the men who made up the vital work force of the river traffic system which played a pivotal role in the expansion of the United States.
