Excerpt from Under Three Flags: With the Red Cross in Belgium, France and Serbia
All places of amusement were closed most lines of the underground railway and tramways stopped running, and the Government requisitioned nearly all the auto-taxis and horse-carriages. This necessitated long and weary tramps across the city, but no word of complaint was heard.
There were no mobs tramping the street and shouting, save occasional troops of children, boys and girls of twelve or fifteen years, whose elders were too much occupied to notice them. These youngsters marched about the streets in the vicinity of the station, chanting Un fusil, dix-huit ans! Until the police checked their patriotism and sent them home.
A notice was posted to remind cab drivers that their honour as Frenchmen was at stake in the matter of over charging, and after that such a thing as an exorbitant charge for cab-fare was unheard of.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an exceptional first-hand account of the European theatre of the First World War as seen through the eyes of two women. The authors arrived in Charleroi, Belgium as volunteers to work in a hospital but arrived to find that most of the wounded were still at the front. Amidst the ruins of a small town, the authors began to volunteer in the improvised hospital while waiting for more wounded to arrive. Armed forces from both sides began to flood the hospitals, as the battle of Charleroi raged on. As the authors assisted, they captured the horrors and tragedies of war firsthand as the town fell to German forces. The authors recount many specific events they witnessed and people they encountered that demonstrate the brutality, callousness and human tragedy that was the First World War, and the exceptional qualities of resilience, courage, and compassion that emerged in the face of adversity. Ultimately, their experiences on the ground in 1914 offer a unique insight into the realities of 20th-century warfare, and the nature of humans in an inhumane fight.
