Excerpt from The Evolution of the American Flag
Many books have been written on the his tory of the American Flag. The subject pre sents serious difficulties, which have been frankly recognized by such writers as General Schuyler Hamilton, Admiral George H. Preble and P. D. Harrison. Some have copied state ments from their predecessors, and where the story seemed incomplete have filled in the gaps with romance. The present volume adds a few authenticated facts to those which have been heretofore published, but does not concern itself with a detailed refutation of any of the romances which have been injected into the story of the Stars and Stripes.
Most of the material for the book was gathered by George Canby, of Philadelphia. His serious work on it may be said to have begun after the death in 1890 of his brother, William J. Canby, who had spent much time on the subject.
