Excerpt from Hope Deferred, Vol. 3 of 3
She tossed her head haughtily, as if in defiance. A woman seldom obeys a man unless she loves him. And though it could not be said that Marietta had entirely ceased to love Charles de Lutz, she had virtually done so from the hour passion had died within her. She clung to him now, proud of her new position, her wealth and title; she knew that he was necessary to their maintenance. She would not have endured a rival, anyone to come between them, more now than in their early wedded life, but for tender love and gratitude towards the man who had done so much for her, she had none. Pride and jealousy were her masters. It was wonderful how speedily she emancipated herself from all control.
