But I may be allowed to emphasize here the principle which has guided me - namely, that in all forms of composition it is with the mass that one should begin at first, gradually paying more attention to the details of form and style. I have felt that many methods of teaching were doomed to failure because they took the component parts of a subject first, each part separately, so that the pupil could not see the wood for the trees. Whereas it would appear more human and humane to get first the creative act, and then shape the thing created.

This book does not pretend to teach the teacher his business. On the contrary, I have always borne in mind the fact that in the last resort it is the personal relation between the lecturer, master, or mistress, and the pupil, which tells in the teaching of composition. So far as details are concerned, points of grammar and of syntax, the use of metaphore and trope, it is difficult to see how anything can be done by the impersonal author of a book.

Rut I may be allowed to emphasize here the principle which has guided me - namely, that in all forms of composition it is with the mass that one should begin at first, gradually paying more attention to the details of form and style. I have felt that many methods of teaching were doomed to failure because they took the component parts of a subject first, each part separately, so that the pupil could "not see the wood for the trees." Whereas it would appear more human and humane to get first the creative act, and then shape the thing created.

Teachers will, I think, find this book a help in the weekly work of English composition. The exercises are ample, and cover a wide ground; but in order to make the book still more useful, blank pages have been bound in whereon further suggestions, notes, and exercises may be set down.
