Next follows a selection from a collection of the letters of Maulavi Nazir Ahmad to his son. 0 The last piece in the prose portion is an extract from the banat-un-na'flr of the same author. This work is a continuation of the mz'rat.ul-'arae which was written for the benefit of his daughters and the two novels are still the most popular books in the Zenanas of Upper India. Nasir Ahmad's other novels the tanoat-unjvagzfi, 16u-ul-vagt' and z'uat were all written with a purpose and are widely read by serious-minded Muhammadans. 'as a writer Nazir Ahniad is a champion ofthe Delhi school. His language is at once polished and idiomatic. In his more ambitious works he does 'not neglect therhetoriéal devices of the old school. In fact he appears to form a' link between the old style of ornate conventionalism and the more simple and natural style of the modern school of Urdd prose writers: 0f the poetry portion of the fadid Kalam-i Urdzz itisnotnecessary to say trurch.' The first seven pieces, retained from'the former edition, are specimens of verse cofiiposed by poets who are trying toiree themselves from the Gul o Buloul tradition ol'persian and Urda poetry.
