There were two events that stood out prominently in the first twelve years of Christopher Dunham's life. If it hadn't been for this first event, it is doubtful if the woman would have found the time, the place, and Christopher properly conjoined when she came driving down the road that led past the "store" and so out to the prairie, beyond which lay the rest of the world. And the coming of the woman was the second event.

Christopher wanted a bicycle, one of the improved pneumatic-tired, diamond-framed, unattainable kind of safeties on which the Terrible Swede, Little Jimmy Michaels, and Jack Swinton, the county champion, rode to victory.
