Excerpt from Englishmen in the French Revolution
French historians have not taken, and could not be expected to take, much notice of aliens, even of those more or less 'actors in the Revolution. In their eyes they are but imperceptible specks in the great eddy. Their attention is absorbed by their own countrymen; they have none to spare for inter lopers, none of whom appreciably influenced the course of events. If they devote a few lines to Cloots, who had to wait till I 8 76'for a biographer, or to Paine, whom they often describe as an Ameri can, they consider they have done quite enough.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book sheds new light on a pivotal event through analysis of the experiences of British subjects in France during the French Revolution. The author explores both the intense enthusiasm and terror faced by these individuals, bringing a fresh perspective to the tumultuous events of that time. By examining the narratives of forgotten eyewitnesses like Lord Massareene, who escaped a prison he had occupied for almost two decades, and Captain Whyte, who was released from solitary confinement only days before his death at age 76, this book offers a unique microcosm of the macrocosm of that bloody period. The author argues convincingly that the experiences of these men and women reveal how French society descended into chaos. They offer profound insights into the nature of a modern revolution, as well as the nature of humanity itself.
