Excerpt from The Digger Movement in the Days of the Commonwealth: As Revealed in the Writings of Gerrard Winstanley, the Digger; Mystic and Rationalist, Communist and Social Reformer
Whatever the prejudices of some may suggest, it will be admitted by all unbiassed judges, that the Protestant Reformation was neither more nor less than an open rebellion. Indeed, the mere mention of private judgment, on which it was avowedly based, is enough to substantiate this fact. To establish the right of private judgment, was to appeal from the Church to individuals; it was to increase the play of each man's intellect it was to test the Opinion of the priesthood by the opinions of laymen it was, in fact, a rising of the scholars against their teachers, of the ruled against their rulers. - buckle.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the Digger Movement, a radical sect that emerged during the tumultuous English Civil War. It emerged from the Protestant Reformation, a period of religious upheaval that sparked a battle between the established church and dissenting Protestant sects. The Diggers were part of this revolutionary movement, promoting a vision of a society free from private property and social hierarchy, advocating for the redistribution of common lands to the people. Through a meticulous examination of Gerrard Winstanley, the movement's spiritual leader, the book offers insights into their utopian vision, which challenged the prevailing social order, advocating for equality and social justice. This book illuminates a fascinating chapter in English history and the evolution of radical political thought, offering a valuable perspective on the struggle for social justice and the enduring search for a more equitable society.
