I have reason to be satisfied with the reception given to my first issue. The subject is one that provokes feeling, perhaps even bitterness, on both sides. Anyone who adopts the cause of the anti-vaccinators is, z'psofaeto, reckoned by a vast number of people - who on any other subject would judge fairly and patiently - a crank, a faddist, and a fool. And, with that singular logic, characteristic of all controversies in which orthodoxy denounces heresy, the mere fact Of his having lapsed into unorthodoxy deprives of all weight the arguments he may use and he has to console himself with the reflection that the heresy of today is often the ortho doxy of to-morrow. And, apart from the vehemence of the professional advocates of the accepted doctrine, he has also to reckon with the indifference of the great majority, whose mental lethargy resents the intrusion Of criticism into what they had always understood to be a settled question.
