Excerpt from Manual of Style: For Use in Composition and Proof Reading
The House of Representatives, on February 26, 1900, ordered that this Second Report of the United States Board on Geographic Names be printed. Accordingly, it was printed and issued in May, 1900, as House of Representatives Document No. 472, Fifty-sixth Congress, first session. The edition was the usual number, viz, copies. At the same time the Government Printing Office stereotyped the plates and printed and bound a few copies for its own use. On April 30, 1900, the Senate passed a concurrent resolution directing the printing and binding of additional copies of this report. About ten months later, viz, on February 25, 1901, the House of Represent atives concurred, and thus the printing of copies was ordered.

The Board's mission is to record and study geographic names inside the boundaries of the United States and, where possible, around the world. This volume contains all the decisions reached by the Board to the date of publication, as well as the history, methodology, and principles on which the Board relies to standardize geographic names. The Board's work is essential because inconsistent or corrupted names can lead to confusion and errors. The Board's established guidelines for naming promote clear and simple names, with the goal of encouraging uniformity across individual maps, government publications, popular works, and even personal correspondence. This comprehensive report is an invaluable resource for historians, cartographers, and all those interested in the origins, meanings, and official adoption of place names in the United States and abroad.
