Excerpt from Conversations of Goethe With Eckermann and Soret, Vol. 2 of 2
Goethe had invited me to take a drive this morning to the Hottelstedt Ecke, the most western summit of the Ettersberg, and thence to the Ettersburg hunt ing lodge. The day was very fine, and we drove early out of the Jacob's gate. Behind Liitzendorf, where the journey was up - hil], and we could only drive leisurely, we had an opportunity for various observations. Goethe observed in the hedges a num ber of birds, and asked me if they were larks. Thou great and beloved one, thought I, though thou hast investigated nature as few others have, in ornithology thou appearest a mere child.
