Excerpt from A Chapter in Diplomatic History
This little sketch was written early in the last summer. Illness and absence in Europe have deferred its publication until now. During the short time which intervened, hamilton fish, the prin cipal actor in the events which it aims to describe, passed away, leaving the history of his public career as a rich legacy to his countrymen. As it will be seen that my knowledge of some of those events was necessarily derived from him, it is proper to say that he did not suggest this publication, nor are his representa tives responsible for it.

Drawing on forgotten records from a tumultuous era in American history, this book sheds new light on the resolution of the Alabama Claims, a long-festering dispute between the United States and Great Britain, stemming from Britain's alleged support of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The author argues that President Ulysses Grant and Secretary of State Hamilton Fish, not Senator Charles Sumner, the issue's most vocal advocate, deserve credit for crafting a solution that averted a potential armed conflict. The book's meticulous research reveals the complex diplomatic maneuvers, personal rivalries, and clashing political agendas that shaped the negotiations, and offers fresh insights into the nature of international relations and the fragility of peace.
