These lectures were delivered by my father to the Clergy Training School at Cambridge in the Lent Term of 1890.
They are almost the only popular lectures which he gave: they are of a widely different character from his other lectures on Church History now in course of publication, and will appeal perhaps to a rather wider circle of readers. Though popular in treatment, they were however composed with all Dr Hort's accustomed care: he had had some idea of revising them for publication.
