Excerpt from The Spirit and the Incarnation: In the Light of Scripture, Science, and Practical Need
I have reason to be thankful for the very kind way in which this Book has been received, and it is now sent forth again in a revised, enlarged, and, I trust, improved Edition.
Dealing as it does with many of the most important subjects Of Theology, sometimes in a new way, the Book could not escape criticism; but the criticism has been, with scarcely an exception, expressed in the most friendly manner, and I have benefited from the whole of it.

Excerpt from The Spirit and the Incarnation: In the Light of Scripture, Science, and Practical Need
For this Third Edition the Book has been thoroughly revised, but there are no material alterations. An effort has been made to bring the treatment of certain subjects, such as the Divine Immanence, the Person of Christ and the Incarnation, up to date. Owing to the importance of the subject of "the Atonement," at this time especially, particular attention has been given to St. Paul's teaching concerning it. In a separate volume entitled The Cross and the Kingdom this subject has been more fully dealt with from Christs own point of view and in the light of the Evolution doctrine; while in Christian Theism and a Spiritual Monism the bearing of Science on Religion in general has been considered, with special reference to the subjects of God, Freedom and Immortality, and in view of Monistic Evolution.
At first it was thought that it would be necessary to set forth the radical difference of the conceptions of Divine "Immanence," Divine "Self-realisation," and Incarnation from those of the "New Theology," but this subject also has been dealt with in a separate small volume entitled What about the New Theology? Much has been written recently concerning the Virgin-birth, but the position taken up with respect to it in the First Edition remains unchanged.
