Excerpt from Scriptures, Hebrew and Christian, Vol. 2: Hebrew Literature
No list is given of the works to which the editor has been indebted for help in the preparation of these vol umes, because this book is intended for the ordinary reader, who would be repelled by such a list. The editor regrets also the impossibility of thanking by name the friends to whom he is indebted for many suggestions, Often of great value.
Much of the present volume received its final shape while the editor was engaged in making preparations for the expedition to Babylonia, of which he had been ap pointed Director, and even after he had left the United States to carry out that enterprise. It was accordingly impossible for him to read the proof sheets of the greater part of this volume, or supervise its passage through the press. He wishes to acknowledge the courtesy of his colleague, the Rev. Dr. Bartlett, who, in the midst of many pressing duties, kindly consented to do this work in his stead. His thanks are also due to the publishers for the unfailing patience with which they have borne with his many delays.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a translation and commentary on Hebrew historical records, literature, and prophecy written during the period of the Babylonian exile. The author provides historical context for each section, addressing the transition from monarchy to exile and the role of the exile in the development of Hebrew religious thought. The book includes selections from Psalms, Lamentations, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Books of Kings and Ezra. The author approaches these selections thematically, rather than chronologically, creating a comprehensive view of the Hebrew experience during the exile, and their path back to a restored covenant with God in the Promised Land.
