He was alarmed at the appearance of the people, and he returned to his fortress. The people in the meantime, had broken into the city of London; where they cut off the heads of those whom they dis liked, and committed other acts of a similar description. To quiet them, the King promised that their grievances should be redressed 5 but, as it afterwards proved, these promises were never intended to be performed.
