Excerpt from The Tragedies of Seneca: Rendered Into English Verse
The student of the English drama finds constant allusion to the influence of Seneca upon the develop ment of English tragedy, but he seldom has such command of Latin as will enable him freely to study Seneca in the original; and should he seek a first hand knowledge of the Senecan plays and of the nature of their influence, a difficulty is at once pre sented by the fact that for many years there has been no English translation available, the old translations of 1581 and 1702 having been long out of print. It was my own sense of the need of a sufficiently literal and otherwise adequate translation of the Roman tragedies, while I was engaged in the study and teaching of the later drama, that occasioned the present translation.
