Excerpt from Zebedee V
Pocahontas, the name of a locality rather than a village, recalls to those who knew it a country store beside a railroad platform; a long line of hitching-posts near an untidy blacksmith shop, where towards train-time various buggies, Day ton wagons, and farm teams were tied; and an irregular Open space stretching from the hitching-rail to the store. A dusty road of many hollows and hidden lumps led down the hill to the store and crossed the narrow-gauge railway. A raised platform served as railroad sta tion, and was apt to be littered with milk.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the life and antics of Zebedee V. Slocum, a charming yet cunning con man. Set in the rural farming community of Pocahontas, Maryland, in the early 20th century, the story unfolds through the eyes of his neighbors who fall prey to his persuasive schemes. Despite warnings from the skeptical women of the village, the men are taken in by Slocum's promises of prosperity and grandeur. As the construction company he establishes rakes in investments, division grows between the sexes, with wives fearing for their financial security. The author delves into the themes of trust, manipulation, and the resilience of small-town communities, painting a vivid picture of the human condition through the lens of one man's cunning and its repercussions on those around him.
