Despite this, the young Crabbe displayed a talent for writing at an early age. But it was not until he moved to London in 1780 that his literary career began in earnest. There, he published The Candidate in 1780, The Library in 1781, and The Village in 1783. The latter two poems brought him to the attention of literary figures such as Burke, Reynolds, and Dr. Johnson, who praised Crabbe for his unique voice and perspective on English society. Crabbe's writing reveals the harsh realities of rural life in a way the public had not previously experienced, particularly his explorations of mental illness and destitution within the lower classes. Crabbe's work exposed social ills and contributed significantly to the growing awareness of social injustice in late 18th-century England.
