Excerpt from Probate Chaff: Or Beautiful Probate; Or Three Years Probating in San Francisco; A Modern Drama Showing the Merry Side of a Dark Picture
For the benefit of my numerous readers I will separate this beautiful court into its component parts and present them in the usual order of gradation, beginning with its immaculate head - the judge the vicegerent. Of widows, the partitioner of dead men's estates, a stainless being robed in ermine and crowned with indisputable power; its ponderous body, which consists of a great standing committee of law yers, whose numbers are as the leaves of the forest unnumbered and numberless; its tail - it has a tail entail (of horror to the initiated), composed of ex ecutors, appraisers, receivers, guardians, referees, clerks, auditors, reporters, publishers, bill-posters auctioneers, cartmen, criers, citors, witnesses, and sheriffs. None of these men are ever paid five hun dred dollars an hour or a day for their services - ah! No!

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This volume is a sharp and analytical exposition of the American Probate System as seen through the lens of a widow who, upon the death of her husband, was compelled to traverse the labyrinthine corridors and frustrating bureaucratic processes of a legal system that is, according to the author, systematically biased against independent women. The author's journey into the Probate Court system presented her with a cast of characters at once absurd and exasperating. From the self-important judge hidden behind an ermine cloak to the obsequious court clerks and the unctuous lawyers, each figure serves to illustrate the dehumanizing aspects of a legal system that reduces living people to mere cogs in an uncaring machine. The author's writing is sarcastic and amusing, but her underlying purpose is a serious one. This book is a thoughtful and incisive commentary on a little understood institution that, despite its venerable history, is woefully out of step with present expectations of justice and equality.
