Inhaltsangabe

Exploring imagery, mood, and Tennyson’s place among modern writers

This inaugural lecture surveys how Tennyson’s poetry fits with late nineteenth‑century fiction and drama, and why his landscapes and moods matter to modern readers. It traces how imagery, rhythm, and perception shape meaning across the poet’s work and its companions in the era.

The author situates Tennyson within a broader literary conversation, comparing his approach to the sentiments and currents that moved writers like Rossetti, Ibsen, Zola, and Meredith. It notes both strengths and limits, highlighting how Tennyson’s vivid landscapes, dreamlike tones, and careful use of sound contribute to a distinctive poetic voice. The discussion also touches on Maud and In Memoriam as touchpoints for his handling of feeling, memory, and moral reflection, while acknowledging shifts in taste over time.
What you’ll experience:

• A clear map of how imagery and mood function in Tennyson’s verse
• Connections between Tennyson and other major writers of his era
• Close looks at landscape language, dream life, and musical effect
• Considerations of how criticism reads his work in light of modern literature

Ideal for readers of literary history and students seeking a concise, thoughtful introduction to Tennyson’s modern relevance.
