Excerpt from A Drake by George
Captain and his wife, their nephew George, with the two servants, Kezia and Bessie. Mrs. Drake was a lady of substance, having spent by far the greater part of her life in a position which, when not recum bent, had been sedentary: when travelling with her husband the compartment they occupied had a singularly crowded appearance. She and the Cap tain were devoted to each other, in spite of the fact that he had not fallen in love with her until he had made sure she did possess a comfortable income, even though it was derived from trust funds in which she enjoyed a life interest only.
You commenced, my love, as the loadstone of my career, remarked the Captain upon the occasion of their silver wedding, and have continued as the pole-star of my existence.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the life of Sir Francis Drake, the illustrious Elizabethan admiral, as he purchases a manor on which he builds a stately home in the parish of Higheld. The author traces the genesis of the village through its subsequent history, ultimately establishing Drake as its founding father. The book assesses Drake's illustrious career, his naval expeditions against the Spanish, the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and his stature as a national hero. It examines the local legends and traditions surrounding Drake's life in Higheld, including his supposed romance with Queen Elizabeth I. The author argues that Drake's legacy extended beyond his naval exploits, influencing the character and identity of the parish. Drake's impact on the community is meticulously documented, from the establishment of local landmarks such as Windward House to the introduction of new customs and traditions that continue to shape Higheld life to this day. This book provides a comprehensive history of Higheld, using Drake's life and times as a lens through which to illuminate the broader social, cultural, and economic changes that occurred in England during the Tudor and Stuart periods. It is not only a detailed account of the life of one of England's greatest naval heroes, but also a vivid portrait of a rural community shaped by its connection to a legendary figure.
