The author, who is deeply concerned about the health of children in America, points out that while 95% of school-aged children are properly immunized, only 40-60% of toddlers receive the vaccinations necessary for protection against preventable infectious diseases. Several factors contribute to this disparity, with cost and lack of access to clinics being significant barriers for many families. The author argues that enactment of universal vaccine assurance would help to alleviate this problem by providing vaccines at no cost to providers who serve children enrolled in Medicaid or who do not have health insurance that covers immunization services. Other measures proposed include establishing State-based immunization registries to track childrenâs immunization status, increasing immunization levels of children receiving Medicaid by requiring States to reimburse providers reasonably for vaccine administration, educating parents and providers about the importance of timely immunization, and maintaining a viable vaccine injury compensation program to increase public confidence in the safety of vaccination. The author concludes that immunization is a basic right and essential for the well-being of all children.
