Excerpt from State Secrets for the People: The Private Letters of Lieut.-General Scott and the Reply of Ex-President Buchanan
Sunday, the weather is bad, and General S. Is not well enough to go to church.
It was not till January 4 that, by the aid of Secretary Holt, (a strong and loyal man,) I obtained permission to send succor to the feeble garrison of Fort Taylor, Key West, and at the same time a company - Major Arnold's, from Boston - to occupy Fort Jefferson, Tortugas Island. If this company had been three days later, the fort would have been pro-occupied by Floridians. It is known that the rebels had their eyes upon these powerful forts, which govern the commerce of the Mexican Gulf, as Gibraltar and Malta govern that of the Mediterranean. With Forts Jefferson and Taylor, the rebels might have purchased an early European recognition.
But matters of the highest national importance seem to forbid a moment's delay, and, if misled by zeal, he hopes for the Presi dent's forgiveness.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the political crisis that gripped the United States in the run-up to the Civil War as pro-slavery states moved to secede and establish the Confederacy. The author presents a detailed account of the events, drawing on official correspondence and diplomatic exchanges, including letters written by General Winfield Scott, who was in charge of the US army at the time. The author explores the individual actions of Scott and President Buchanan, and the complex relationship between them, as Scott anticipated the Southern secession movement and repeatedly tried to persuade Buchanan to reinforce forts in the Southern states to prevent attacks. The book also examines the broader political climate of the time, including the influence of secessionist politicians and the failure of attempts to negotiate a peaceful resolution, presenting a nuanced analysis of the lead-up to one of the most pivotal conflicts in US history.
