Excerpt from The World of Cant
Most of the shops along the route were closed for ordinary business; the goods which the windows usually contained having been withdrawn in favour of reserved seats to view the procession, the large profits of which were another gratifying indication, especially to the trades men, of the popular enthusiasm. Grand stands were erected on all unoccupied plots of ground, the costs of which, and of suitable luncheons to favoured guests, were munificently defrayed by Boards of Works, Metropolitan Vestries, and other local bodies, who were thus able to indulge their personal loyalty at the expense of the ratepayers.
