Excerpt from The Literature of the French Renaissance: An Introductory Essay
There are few periods of literature that seem to lend themselves better to historical treatment than that of the French Renaissance. Though it is illustrated by two of the greatest names on the roll of French literature, Rabelais and Montaigne, the general aspect that it presents to us is the record rather of a great national literary movement than of individual men of letters. Moreover this move ment was a faithful reflexion of a corresponding change in the whole social and intellectual life of the people. At all times I believe the literature of a nation to be more or less of an index to its moral and intellectual state. It is especially so in times of great stress and fermentation. It was preeminently so in the time of the Renaissance.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an introductory insight into the immensely influential and multifaceted French Renaissance, which took place in the 15th and 16th centuries. The author begins by defining the Renaissance as a historical period of change from medieval to modern thought, distinguished by a "spirit of free inquiry" and a rediscovered appreciation for beauty. The author speaks about the origins of the French Renaissance by tracing the development of French literature, from its anonymous medieval origins to the more personalized style that emerged in the 15th century. They discuss the religious and political influences of the time, which shaped the unique characteristics of the French Renaissance. From the consolidation of the French monarchy and the invasion of Italy to the patronage of the arts by influential figures like King Francis I, these factors combined to create an environment that fostered the new intellectual and artistic spirit. The author also explores the revival of classical learning and the invention of printing, which were significant catalysts for the Renaissance. By comparing the characteristics of the Renaissance in France to its Italian counterpart, the author concludes that the French Renaissance was ultimately more enduring, partly due to its close association with the Protestant Reformation.
