These Lectures on Moses were delivered to the congregation of St. James' Church, New London, Conn., on the Friday evenings of the winter of 1867-8. They were acceptable, and a desire was expressed that they should be preserved in a book. Their author, perhaps too readily, assented. They lay no claims to originality. The readers of them will easily discover some of the sources from which they were drawn. Dean Stanley was much looked into, but seldom contributed more than a pretty phrase or happy term of expression. His history is mainly a romance.
