By fo doing, we may afl'ord rational fatisfaétion to our own minds, and reflect. Moreover on ourfelves deferved honour, by endeavouring to promote the happinefs of mankind in general, and by defending.

The principles of government are now more generally considered than they ever yet have been. Many are of opinion that this is the misfortune of the times; others, on the contrary, think that it is their happiness, and their glory. Mankind is undoubtedly much inclined to extremes. If the world for ages past has been enamoured of ignorance, it is possible she may now have ventured rather too incautiously into the intricate labyrinth of speculation. A prudent exertion of reason however must be allowed natural to man.
