Excerpt from Cardinal Manning
My thanks are due to numerous friends who have contributed advice and information; but more especially to Mr. John P. Anderson, the courteous and indefatigable Clerk of the Reading Room at the British Museum, to whom is due, substantially, though not in its present form, the full bibliography which will, I hope, give a special value to this volume. I also owe it to Mr. Anderson that I could make good use of the few and short visits I have been able to pay to the Museum myself. To Mr. H. Whitehead I am indebted for a full and accurate collection of facts, involving prolonged and laborious researches there, which I could not have spared the time to undertake; and I have also found very serviceable the two collections of letters which Mr. Wilfrid Meynell has put forth in [merry England. I trust that the book will be found to illustrate fairly and with sympathy the progress and consistency of Manning's career; and so, until a full and authorized biography has been published, which can hardly te for some years to come, may be accepted as a tribute to a life that must, on the whole, be accounted noble and memorable.
