Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer: Rendered Into English Prose for the Use of Those Who Cannot Read the Original
So spake he in prayer, and Phoebus Apollo heard him, and came down from the peaks of Olympus wroth at heart, bearing on his shoulders his bow and covered quiver. And the arrows clanged upon his shoulders in his wrath, as the god moved; and he descended like to night. Then he sate him aloof from the ships, and let an arrow fly 5 and there was heard a dread clanging of the silver bow. First did he assail the mules and fleet dogs, but afterward, aiming at the men his piercing dart, he smote; and the pyres of the dead burnt continually in multitude.

Positioned within literary history as one of the oldest works still read today and endlessly referenced in Western literature, it's a foundational work of Greek literature, as well as the Western Canon overall. The poem follows the Achaeans as they besiege the city of Troy. Among the Achaean leaders is Achilles, who has quarreled with Agamemnon and, in response, withdraws from battle, an act that has severe consequences for the Achaeans. The epic is rife with themes including but not limited to: the destructive nature of pride, the tolls of war, the interplay of gods and humans, and the vagaries of fate. Through the insights and experiences of Achilles, Agamemnon, and others, the author gives the reader an intimate understanding of the human condition, exploring the ways in which our passions and choices shape our lives and destinies.
