That the Gospels do not furnish ready to our hands a complete outline of our Lord's life, as regards the order of time and precise date of each occurrence, is no reason why we should not endeavour to construct such an outline. The events must have happened in a certain real order, at cer tain actual points Of time. And it must be very instructive and in many ways helpful to ascertain this order, if we can. The inquiry has been encumbered by the vain attempt to assign an exact place to every event or saying in the Gos pels. It has been perplexed with a mass of learned contro versy. Vast erudition and pains have been expended in building up difficulties, which have had to be levelled at a corresponding cost. There are some points on which no amount of scholarship can warrant any man in speaking dogmatically. Such, for instance, is the question whether the feast mentioned in John v. 1 was a Passover. Yet the evidence throughout the inquiry is such that, when clearly stated, the educated English reader, familiar with his New Testament, may form his own judgment concerning it.
