Excerpt from A Wreath of Rhyme
This is my only plea for adding another trifle to the literary world, and here I may remark that my books have had a fair share of patronage, considering the author's position in life and the many beautiful poetical efl'usions daily issuing from the press. To those who would be critical I would say, Be lenient - the author was a fisher boy, born to toil: he has passed through many phases in life.

This book, a stirring account of a young shing boy's life at sea, transports readers to a bygone era where life in coastal towns of Kent, UK was inseparable from the rhythms of the North Sea. A meditation on the trials and tribulations of a friendless young orphan, the book presents a vivid portrait of 19th-century shing communities. At the heart of the narrative are the author's skillful evocation of the boy's emotional turmoil as he negotiates a harsh and unforgiving environment. The author's experiences as a boy on a shing smack lend an authentic touch to this heartfelt and compelling story. Compassionately exploring his young subject's development from a hopeful boy to a hardened young man, the narrative lays bare his mental anguish and physical suffering, while positioning it within the broader context of the economic and social realities of the time. Ultimately, this classic of seafaring literature is a powerful testament to the human spirit's resilience, while serving as an invaluable historical record of an era when many vulnerable and at-risk people turned to the sea to make their way in life.
