Ethelwold's promotion to the see of Winchester, ad. 963, (see Florentins Vigorniensis,) [elfric accompanies him, and during his residence in that city, appears to have been diligent in studying the Latin language, and the works of the fathers of the Church. Whilst here he is supposed to have composed his Glossary, and the Colloquia puer orum, which was afterwards enlarged and re-edited by his namesake ielfric Bata. He also translated from the Latin into the Saxon language at the request of Ethelweard the eal derman of Cornwall, most of the historical books of the Old Testament, viz., the Pentateuch, Joshua, Judges, part of the book of Kings, Esther, and (afterwards to encourage. Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life and works of Ãâlfric, a prominent figure in Anglo-Saxon England. As a prolific writer and translator, Ãâlfric left behind a rich legacy of homilies, biblical translations, and other writings that offer valuable insights into the religious and intellectual landscape of the time. The author meticulously traces Ãâlfric's journey from his early education at Abingdon Abbey to his rise as Abbot of St. Albans and eventually Archbishop of Canterbury. His dedication to monastic life, his mastery of Latin, and his commitment to making religious texts accessible to the common people in their own language are explored in detail. Through an examination of Ãâlfric's writings, the book explores theological debates of the period, particularly concerning the Eucharist and the role of the clergy. Ãâlfric's views, often contrasting with those held by the Roman Catholic Church of the present day, shed light on the complexities of religious thought in early medieval England. By illuminating the life and works of this influential figure, the book provides a deeper understanding of Anglo-Saxon England and its unique contributions to the history of Christianity. Ãâlfric's enduring legacy serves as a testament to the power of language and the importance of making knowledge accessible to all.
