Excerpt from Dispatches and Letters, Vol. 1: Relating to the Blockade of Brest, 1803-1805
The various papers and documents which fill this volume, and those which are to be embodied in its successor, are an essential complement to the 'letters and Dispatches' Of Nelson Of the same period included in the volumes edited by Sir N. Harris Nicolas. Hitherto our understanding Of the conditions of the great blockade Of 1803 - 5 has necessarily been partial and imperfect. The character Of the Operations within the Mediter ranean is, indeed, well known, but no sort Of justice has been done to the achievement Of Cornwallis and his captains. Their work as blockaders was more important and more successful than that Of Nelson at the same period. The tenacity of Com wallis prepared the way for Trafalgar; it had already forced upon Napoleon the consciousness Of his impotence, and was to drive him to those conti nental complications which led to the catastrophe Of Waterloo. As Captain Mahan finely says, in a sentence Often quoted, 'those storm-beaten ships, upon which the soldiers Of the granule armée never looked, stood between them and the dominion Of the world.'

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in British naval history - the blockade of Brest from 1803 to 1805. The author, drawing on a wealth of primary sources including official dispatches, secret letters, and ship logs, paints a vivid picture of the challenges and triumphs faced by the British navy during this crucial period. The book goes beyond simply documenting the physical act of blockade, exploring the strategic thinking behind it, the evolving tactics employed, and the personal hardships endured by the sailors. The narrative reveals how the blockade played a crucial role in shaping the course of the Napoleonic Wars, forcing Napoleon to abandon his plans for invading England and instead focus on continental campaigns. The book delves into Napoleon's own strategies and the meticulous preparations he made for invasion, contrasting them with the British response. This deepens our understanding of the complex geopolitical landscape of the early 19th century and the strategic thinking that shaped the destinies of nations. By blending detailed accounts of naval actions with insightful analysis of the broader political context, the author illuminates a forgotten chapter in British naval history, showcasing the grit and determination of the sailors who held the line against a formidable enemy. This book offers a compelling and nuanced account of one of the most significant naval campaigns of the Napoleonic era.
