Excerpt from Three Months in a Workshop: A Practical Study
I have dedicated my book to my fellow-workmen in the factory in token of remembrance, and of the hearty good will and affection which I shall always-entertain towards them. May they receive from it an assurance of my pur pose to devote every energy to the service of their cause. I am aware that I shall be regarded with suspicion, but, coming myself from the humblest rank, I can but claim to be regarded as no less loyal towards them than others profess to be.

Taking the perspective of a factory worker in 1891 Saxony, this book offers a unique insight into urban working-class life through the firsthand experiences of a theological student who went undercover as a factory hand for three months. This book serves as a catalyst for a social awakening, challenging many preconceptions about the social and economic status of the working class held by Germany's elite. The author delves into the material conditions, social and political tendencies, education, religion, and moral conditions of his fellow workers, speaking not just to their financial situations but their hopes, fears, and aspirations. Although the author's findings are specific to time and place, he draws conclusions about the broader human condition that remain relevant today. This book humanizes the often forgotten working class, and it continues to inform the modern reader about the historical roots of social democracy. It is a historical document of immense significance and a fascinating read for anyone interested in the complexities and contradictions of class dynamics then and now.
