We walk through the ruins of Tintern, of Fountains, of Grace Dieu, and the hundred other remnants of those mysterious, long-departed, good old days of Merrie England, of which the monastic economy formed no inconsiderable a part, and are strangely moved by the silent grandeur of the stately magnifi cence of these structures, even in their decay. They seem to speak to us in a language which penetrates to the very soul, awing us too, as it were, into a silence of admiration, so that we can only wonder, and listen, and sympathise with them in their desolation. How strangely we learn to love these desecrated sanctuary homes of industry and peace - peaceful and beautiful in life, and in decay no less beautiful and reposed whose very stones seem to live again, and to gush with life and long-past memories at our approach, each with its own sad story of faded glory or sacrilegious spoliation.
The old fable which so erroneously supposed the misnamed Dark Age as a period when the world was cloaked in ignorance and sloth has long since been happily exploded, and the men of to-day are beginning to see things as they really existed.
