Excerpt from Lectures on Obstetric Operations: Including the Treatment of Hæmorrhage and Forming a Guide to the Management of Difficult Labour
When I first ventured to describe this book as a guide to the management of difficult labour, I did so with hesitation. Methods of practice which, by multiplied experiences and anxious thought, had assumed in my mind something of the precision of definite rules, might not commend themselves to the judgment of others, and I might fail to set them forth in such a manner as to make them intelligible. In the latter Object, at any rate, success has been achieved. A large number of practitioners have assured me that by following the directions in this book they have acquired practical skill in obstetric operations; and many more have assured me that when called upon to act in the sudden and pressing emergencies of Obstetric practice, they have found information and counsel which have brought safety to their patients, and comfort to themselves. The somewhat ambitious title, then, has been justified to a degree surpassing my expectation.
The success achieved increases responsibility and the correlative duty to make the work still more useful to those who honour me by their confidence. To this end I have done my best. Without materially modifying the doctrines set forth in former editions, I have sought to make them more clear by new illustrations and careful revision.
A short lecture on the signs of Dystocia, and the general indi cations for operative interference, has been added as an introduction.
