In the five years which have elapsed since its original publication it has come to be recognised, both in this country and abroad, as a handbook, or standard authority, on the working and management of railways, and it is of the essence of such a work that it should be periodically revised and brought - so to speak - up to date. In the world of rail ways, events move quickly, and history is so rapidly made, that what is perfectly true as a statement of fact to-day may be no longer true to-morrow, to say nothing of the fact that statistics, which are freely scattered throughout this book, are of little value unless they deal with recent periods.
