Excerpt from Discussion of the Precision of Measurements: With Examples Taken Mainly From Physics and Electrical Engineering
In venturing to urge the importance of the subject as a course of study for engineers and for students of physics or other pure sciences, the author would suggest the value of the attitude of mind produced by it. One who has in any reason able degree mastered its methods, although he may never apply them directly, Will not only have increased his power to intelligently scrutinize experimental results, but will have acquired a tendency to do so. And it is perhaps not too much to hope that he may acquire a notion of a judicious distribution of effort which, with the best of results to himself, he may carry into quite other matters.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to understanding the precision and accuracy of quantitative measurements. The author presents a structured methodology for evaluating both direct and indirect measurements, allowing for rigorous, objective analysis. The book addresses the inherent errors and uncertainties of measurements, offering practical methods to identify, minimize, and account for them. By examining the effects of variable and constant errors, the book establishes principles for determining the most effective approaches to measurement, balancing precision and accuracy with the resources available. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the relationship between component measurements and their aggregate precision. The insights presented in this book empower researchers and practitioners to make well-informed decisions, optimize their measurement strategies, and develop a deep understanding of the limitations and possibilities of quantitative measurements. By providing a systematic framework for assessing and improving measurement precision, it enhances the reliability and validity of scientific and engineering investigations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
