Upwards of two years ago the author of this book began the publication, in the Railway Engineering and Mechanics, of a series of articles treating of the history of the railroad brake. Favor able comment from many readers has encouraged him to believe that the subject is of sufficient interest to warrant the preservation of the matter contained in the articles referred to in a more permanent form. It has therefore been revised and corrected; and, together with some additional material, brought together to form the basis of this work.
