Professor Albert Munsell was an artist first, later a teacher and finally a color theorist. He developed basic underlying rules for system of color organization, primarily because he wished to bring a sense of order to his study of color. Munsell envisaged the study of color eventually becoming similar to the study of notes and harmony in music. The systematic method of being able to tell in advance how multiple elements would combine was appealing to him and he hoped to be able to categorize colors in this way using the visual properties of hue, value and chroma.
Munsell discovered the three dimensional nature of color and it gave him the structure he was seeking for each individual color and it?s relationships to others. He published the core principles of his system in this book, A Color Notation, A Measured Color System, Based on the Three Qualities Hue, Value, and Chroma.
Munsell?s system of color categorization has gained acceptance on an international scale in the intervening years. It can be found in reference books, dictionaries, text books for art students and material on photography and television production. Its application is evident in paintings, textiles and plastic products produced up to the present day. It is also held as the standard methods of color classification in the United States, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom. His system has been widely used in color science and has been the object of scientific studies in its own right.
This book contains charts, diagrams, descriptions and directions for the teacher and the student and as a work of enduring significance across all areas of artistic and everyday life, it demands to be considered.

Excerpt from A Color Notation: A Measured Color System, Based on the Three Qualities Hue, Value, and Chroma With Illustrative Models, Charts, and a Course of Study Arranged for Teachers
At various times during the past ten years, the gist of these pages has been given in the form of lectures to students of the Normal Art School, the Art Teachers' Association, and the Twentieth Century Club. In October of last year it was presented before the Society of Arts of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at the suggestion of Professor Charles R. Cross.
Grateful acknowledgment is due to many whose helpful criticism has aided in its development, notably Mr. Benjamin Ives Gilman, Secretary of the Museum of Fine Arts, Professor Harry E. Clifford, of the Institute of Technology, and Mr. Myron T. Pritchard, master of the Everett School, Boston.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. Have you ever struggled to describe a specific color, frustrated by the limitations of everyday language? This book delves into the fascinating world of color, offering a systematic and scientific approach to understanding and communicating its nuances. The author argues that color, like music, possesses distinct dimensions that can be measured and named. He introduces the concept of a "color sphere," a three-dimensional model that organizes colors based on their hue, value (lightness or darkness), and chroma (intensity). This framework allows for precise color identification and eliminates the ambiguity of subjective descriptions. Through engaging examples and practical exercises, the book guides readers in developing their color perception and expression. It explores the fascinating interplay of color mixing, revealing how neighboring hues blend to create intermediates, while opposites cancel each other out. The author also delves into the concept of color balance, demonstrating how the strategic placement and proportion of colors can create harmonious compositions. This book ultimately empowers readers with a deeper understanding of color and the tools to communicate their color ideas with clarity and confidence. Whether you are an artist, designer, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of color, this book offers valuable insights that will enrich your visual experience.
