I suppose that if I Argued for 1,000 years with a New Englander about that ancestral pride stuff we would end up still thinking each others point of view was queer. And probably both of us would be right.

I asked a confirmed New Englander just why so much more importance was placed by her on one's ancestry than on his own personal achievements. Her reply was ready:

"Doesn't it stand to reason," she asked, "that if one comes into the world with an inheritance of good qualities he has a better chance of success than if he comes from poor family stock?"

"But," I replied, "you are not fair. If a man, despite his endowment of brains and his advantages of cultural environment, turns out to be a no-account, a heel or a criminal, you overlook all of his shortcomings by saying, 'Yes, but he comes from an excellent family'. And if a boy who comes from scrubby people and is given no training or other aid whatever but, despite those handicaps, becomes a credit to society you discount all his achievements by the belittling observation, 'Yes, but look at what an awful family background he has'."

She considered my remarks to be without point.
