General Keifer was educated in public schools and at Antioch Col lege, and while working on the home farm took up the study of law. He also studied in the law offices of Anthony and Goode. He was admitted to the bar at Springfield, January 12, 1858, and then began his work as a practicing lawyer in that city. He had just three years in which to win for himself a measure of success and proficiency as a lawyer before the Civil war came on.
