Excerpt from A Vindication of the Separate System of Prison Discipline: From the Misrepresentations of the North American Review, July, 1839
The long-pending controversy respecting the comparative merits of the Auburn (or silent) and the Pennsylvania (or se parate) systems of prison discipline, is reduced by the July number of the North American Review to very narrow limits; and, as the writer is evidently the friend and advocate of the former, we may suppose that the claim which he asserts in its behalf is presented in the most favourable aspect, and with all the advantages of the latest and fullest experience.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the efficacy and benefits of separate and silent systems of prison discipline as alternatives to traditional methods. The author compares the Pennsylvania (separate) and the Auburn (silent) systems, arguing that the former is superior in achieving rehabilitation. The separate system's complete isolation of prisoners during their entire sentence is said to allow for true reform by preventing further contamination and providing ample time for reflection. Meanwhile, the Auburn system's reliance on silence during work while allowing social interaction is argued to be less effective due to prisoners forming new criminal connections. The book contends that the complete isolation of the separate system, while seemingly harsh, can break prisoners from ingrained habits and negative influences, enabling them to reintegrate into society as reformed citizens.
