On the completion of the eight biennial volume, the Editors of S. & D. N. & Q. are glad to take the opportunity of expressing their thanks to their supporters generally, and to the many contributors of articles of interest and value, which have seen the light in their pages during the last two years. In particular they beg to thank those gentlemen who have supplied series of communications from the Public Records of the Kingdom, which they believe add greatly to the permanent value of the Magazine. The abstracts of Dorset Inquisitiones post mortem will be of considerable assistance to all who are concerned with the manorial history of the county. They also beg to thank the friends who have favoured them with the loan of blocks for illustrations, or of photographs from which blocks have been made.
In some of the quarterly numbers the material for Somerset has been the more abundant, in others that for Dorset, but no signs are yet apparent of the failure of either source of supply. They appeal, however, to their readers and others, to render the stream perennial.
They are pleased to reckon among the contributors to the eighth volume Mr. Hugh Norris, the pioneer editor for Somerset, and the Hon. J. S. Udal, Chief Justice of the Leeward Islands, whose absence from Dorset has not impaired his affection for his native soil.
