Excerpt from Card Records in Use in the Bureau of Pensions, 1916
The card records in use in the Bureau of Pensions have grown to such proportions and serve such important yet different purposes that it is very desirable to have them published, both because of their great value to the employees of the bureau, who are required to make daily use of the information contained therein, and also because of their importance to the general public as an index to vast and varied information.
The work for this purpose has been very carefully performed by the following employees of the bureau, namely, Mr. Charles M. Yeates, Mr. Thomas R. Raines, Mr. George Scharf, and Mr. Alexander K. Meek, who acted under the personal direction of the commissioner.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book describes the history and evolution of the card-index record system employed by the Bureau of Pensions. The system was initially developed as an index of soldiers' service records in order to quickly locate and process pension claims, which were numerous following the Civil War. Over time, the system's functionality expanded to include a wide range of records and different divisions within the Bureau. The book provides an in-depth examination of the various record types and their interconnections, offering a comprehensive understanding of the Bureau's pension operations and the broader pension system of the United States. The author explores how the card-index system transformed record-keeping, making it more efficient and accessible, and thus enhancing the ability of the Bureau to serve veterans and their dependents. Ultimately, this book offers valuable insights into the history of pension administration and the development of record-keeping technologies, contributing to our understanding of both the history of the Bureau of Pensions and the evolution of information management.
