Since the writer is not a special student of Lepidoptera he has pre ferred to use in the present work the lepidopterous genera in Smith's Catalogue rather than to adopt those recently proposed by certain European systematists, among whom is Sir G. F. Hampson, who has been for some time engaged upon the Pyralidae. By so doing he believes that a certain degree of unnecessary confusion will be avoided, as it is by no means certain that the new generic arrangement of the European lepidopterists will be generally adopted in toto by Americans; and, until this matter has received the attention which is its due on the part of our students of this order, the old genera will be retained.
