Gentlemen: The Laboratory Section was organized in 1899 for two reasons, both of which were significant of the times.

The first reason was the great development of labora tory work, and the importance which laboratory results had come to possess in public health circles. The rise and growth of the laboratory idea is too well known to all of you for extended reference here.
