Excerpt from A Brief History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the Proceedings of the Synod of Kentucky: Relative to the Late Cumberland Presbytery: In Which Is Brought to View a Brief Account of the Origin and Present Standing of the People Usually Denominated Cumberland Presbyterians, as Taken From Official Documents and Facts in Possession of Synod
The Synod did review their proceedings, as we have seen, and the result was, a firm adherence to their former proceed ings, which ultimately gained the approbation of the Assem bly, as has also been shown. The complaming party never appeared before the Assembly in the attltude oi appellant57 and consequently they could pass nojud1cial dec1sion in their case. It soon became more and more endent, that the regu lar course was not the one by which they desired to obtain redress, otherwise they might have adopted it, seemg it was perfectly open and plain. Time and circumstances have long ago fully established the correctness of the course pursued by the higher judicatoxies in arresting the highly irregular and unconst1tutional conduct of the Cumberland Presbytery. Even their distant advocates at length became silent, and gave up all hopes of ever reclaiming them to the sound and correct faith and discipline of the Presbyterian Church.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the ecclesiastical conflict between the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the larger Presbyterian Church in the United States of America from 1802 to 1814. The Cumberland Church originated as a schism within the Transylvania Presbytery, one of the founding presbyteries of the Synod of Kentucky, caused by a dispute over the ordination of ministers without proper qualifications. The Synod, and later the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, intervened in the dispute and condemned the ordinations as irregular and unconstitutional. This led to the formation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, whose adherents maintained the legitimacy of their ordinations and continued to operate as a separate denomination. The book addresses the historical and theological issues at stake in the conflict and offers insights into the nature of Presbyterian polity and its relationship to the broader American religious landscape.
